I hate to admit this, but I have not been a good environmentalist. I regularly walked past the aisles of natural and organic products with eyes only for my usual chemically-loaded favorites. What happened to the soapy water in the washing machine never crossed my mind. If one product’s chemicals dried out my skin, another product’s chemicals would moisturize it again.
I gamely tried an assortment of “green” natural and organic home and personal products recently because of my e-commerce business shopandearnwithbarb.com – it promotes saving the earth and ourselves by going green. So I purchased many name-brand products online from my site, the same brands as you see in the health food stores or national chains with green sections.
I now have to admit that I am surprised that I like many of these products better than what I used to use. The hand and dishwashing soaps do not dry out my skin. The moisturizers don’t contain any petroleum products. The sunblock contains exactly what my dermatologist wants me to use. I even tried a “laundry ball” instead of laundry detergent. I was pretty skeptical about this little green and pink ball going up against my husband’s very sweaty golf clothes. I smelled each and every piece of clothing before it went into the drier. No smell at all! Amazing! Totally clean! And the ball, which costs about the same as one large detergent, lasts about the same as three large detergents, so I just saved the water supply and money!
I just purchased chemical-free baby products for my niece and nephew who just had their first baby as well as for our newly-arrived 5th grandchild. I bought products for my mother, and for friends as birthday and holiday gifts. And of course, more for me! (did I mention that I get 20% cash back from all of my “green” purchases? – just another perk!). It’s not all about cleaning – there are fabulous body butters, bath salts, shampoos, lotions, make-up, as well as teas and nutritional products.
I spent a lifetime putting chemicals into and onto my body, and can’t undo the effects they may have had. I can only go forward and try to prevent further damage and be healthier.
So if you have turned your nose up at “natural” or “organic” products, suck it up and give it a try! It’s pretty cool to be “green”!
